Richland County disaster recovery contractor helping to check wells

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC – Richland County officials are working with a disaster recovery contractor, Tetra Tech, to offer assistance to residents whose wells may have been contaminated in the October flood.
Residents should be advised that Tetra Tech staff carry Richland County photo identification.
The company is following up with homeowners who received positive results for total coliform or e. coli from well water samples submitted to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
Representatives with Tetra Tech state clearly they are available to provide disinfection services and retest residential well water to ensure the wells are free of harmful bacteria. This is a free service for homeowners whose wells already have been tested by DHEC.
Residents should be wary of anyone offering to disinfect or test their wells without the proper Richland County or DHEC credentials.
Richland County:
- Tetra Tech staffers carry a Richland County photo ID.
- Tetra Tech offers well disinfection services and retesting of wells, not initial testing.
- Tetra Tech staffers only contact property owners whose wells were previously identified, by DHEC, as containing a positive result for total coliform or e. coli.
DHEC:
- DHEC inspectors carry a DHEC photo ID.
- DHEC inspectors do not enter private property unsolicited.
