Richland One’s Class of 2014 Sets New District Scholarship Record

COLUMBIA, SC – Richland One’s Class of 2014 graduates have received nearly $65 million in scholarship offers and other financial aid, setting a new district record.

This year’s total of $64.7 million exceeds last year’s class total by more than $12 million. With nearly $18 million in scholarships, Lower Richland High School students had the highest total among district high schools.

Outstanding scholarship recipients in the Class of 2014 include Gates Millennium Scholars Jaleel Jefferson of Dreher High School and Samanuel Martin of W.J. Keenan High School. The highly esteemed and competitive Gates Millennium Scholarships, which are funded through a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will cover the entire cost of their college education, including graduate school.

To date, Richland One has four students who have been awarded the prestigious National Merit Scholarships for academic excellence: Dreher High senior Jinyu Gao and A.C. Flora High School seniors Mary Elizabeth Saine, Simran Mathews and Coryelle Pondy. Other impressive awards included $20,000 scholarships from the Columbia Rotary Club to Dreher senior Terry Sweat and Kaitlin Vance of Columbia High School.
