Richland One announces 2021 Coaches of the Year

Richland One recently named the district’s 2021 Coaches of the Year during the annual Coaches Convocation.

Caleb Clark, Dreher High School’s Track and Field Coach was named High School Coach of the Year, and Mark Davis of Hopkins Middle School’s head football coach was named Middle School Coach of the Year.

Other middle and high school coaches who were nominated for the award were:

  • Nathaniel Middleton — W.G. Sanders Middle School

HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE YEAR NOMINEES

  • Lyndsey West — A.C. Flora High School
  • Walt Wilson — C.A. Johnson High School
  • Pierre Fome’ — Columbia High School
  • Belton Goodwin — Eau Claire High School
  • Reggie McLain — W.J. Keenan High School

The H.B. Rhame Award, a distinction given annually to the high school with the best overall sports program, went to A.C. Flora High School.

The theme of this year’s Coaches Convocation was “Keeping Students First” and the speaker was Connor Shaw, the University of South Carolina’s (UofSC) all-time winningest quarterback and director of football relations at UofSC. The Convocation is a professional development session which provides the district athletics staff members an opportunity to enhance their coaching skills, discuss best practices regarding athletics and acknowledge the contributions of administrators, coaches and student-athletes.

Richland One General Counsel Susan Williams, Charlie Wentzky, assistant commissioner of the South Carolina High School League and athletic trainer Jason Wimberly of Prisma Health were all on hand to share their expertise.
