Richland One announces initial plan for makeup days

October 15, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Richland One students missed seven school days due to the historic flooding that affected the Columbia area and other parts of the state. The district has announced its initial plan for students to make up those missed days.

“We believe that every day of instructional time is critical,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. “It is our intention for our students to make up all seven days. We will not seek to waive any of the days missed.”

By state law, students must receive 180 days of instruction. Districts are required to designate three makeup days in their calendars that would be used if schools have to be closed due to inclement weather. Richland One will use its three designated makeup days: February 15, March 18 and May 30.

In addition, October 23, which was scheduled to be a teacher workday/student holiday, will be a regular day for students and staff. The Richland One Board of School Commissioners approved that change at the October 13 board meeting. October 22 will remain an early release day for all schools; October 22 is counted as a full day of school.

Announcements about the district’s plans for students to make up the three other days will be forthcoming.
