Richland One to host annual Jazz Festival April 12

April 10, 2024

Richland One families and community members can enjoy an evening in the park while listening to students play jazz music. The district will hold its annual Jazz Festival on Friday, April 12 from 4-7 p.m. at Emily Douglas Park (2500 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC 29205). The event is free and open to the public.

April is National Jazz Appreciation Month and the district takes the opportunity each year to celebrate the heritage and history of jazz music. Jazz bands from middle schools and high schools across Richland One are scheduled to perform, as well as the middle school and high school honors jazz bands. There will also be a special performance by the Richland One Faculty Jazz Band.

The middle school honor jazz band will be working with Richland One graduate Jonathan Hernandez, the director of bands at Cane Bay Middle School and director of the Berkeley County Jazz Honor Band. The high school honor jazz band will be working with Mark Sterbank, the director of jazz ensembles at Charleston Southern University.

There will be food vendors at the festival. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Hand Middle School.
