Kirstin Bullington, Next Energy Engineering Instructor at the Richland Two Student Innovation Center, has been named a 2023 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) in the Science category. This prestigious award represents the highest recognition available to K-12 mathematics and science teachers in the United States.

Bullington joins an elite group of educators recognized for their contributions to STEM education. The award includes a $10,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, a certificate signed by the President of the United States, and an invitation to Washington, D.C. for recognition events and professional development opportunities.

Bullington’s students have achieved national recognition for their innovative energy solutions, including a patented modular power apparatus developed in collaboration with a school in Senegal. She is in her 22nd year in the classroom.

“This award reflects not only Kirstin’s exceptional teaching abilities but also her commitment to global education and sustainable development,” said Superintendent Dr. Kim. Moore. “Her ability to connect students with real-world engineering challenges continues to transform how our students experience STEM education.”

Bullington’s accolades include the 2023 SC Conservation Teacher of the Year (Secondary), 2022 SC STEM Teacher of the Year and recognition as a Lemelson-MIT Invention Education Fellow. She holds National Board Certification and earned degrees from the University of Evansville and Tulane University.

She is the seventh science teacher from Richland Two to receive this prestigious award since 1985. The district has now produced eleven PAEMST winners overall, including four mathematics teachers.
