March 8, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – Wyche environmental attorney Rita Bolt Barker was featured as a Guest Speaker at Clemson University’s Women in Leadership Week. The program was part of Clemson’s College of Business and Behavioral Science “Dean’s Leadership Speaker Series” to engage, inspire, and empower students and the community through discussions about issues across disciplines. Barker delivered a thought-provoking message about powerful life-lessons she has learned through being an environmental attorney.

“We are delighted to have distinguished leaders like Rita Bolt Barker who can offer insight into their personal experiences, provide advice on becoming successful leaders, and share solutions to meeting the changing needs of our local and global community,” said Bobby McCormick, Dean of Clemson’s College of Business and Behavioral Science.

In 2013, the ABA SEER awarded Barker with the “Distinguished Environmental Advocacy Award” based on her contribution to the development of law, policy, and programs in the areas of energy and the environment. She focuses her practice on environmental law, advising clients on matters arising under federal and state environmental laws. Barker assists clients in investigating and responding to matters such as permitting challenges, regulatory requests for information, and enforcement actions before administrative agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. She also advises clients on assessing environmental risks and incentives associated with corporate transactions, such as mergers, acquisitions, and real estate deals, including brownfields redevelopment.

Barker is past Chair of the Board of Directors for Greenville Forward, and a member of the City of Greenville’s Green Ribbon Advisory Committee and Brownfields Task Force. She has also taught Administrative Law at Clemson University and Environmental Law at Furman University. South Carolina Super Lawyers has named Barker a “Rising Star”, and Chambers USA lists her as one of South Carolina’s leading environmental lawyers. Barker is a graduate of Clemson University and Harvard Law School.
