River Bluff High School proudly extends its heartfelt congratulations to Phil Savitz, esteemed coach and mentor, on being awarded the prestigious Order of the Silver Crescent. This esteemed honor recognizes Savitz’s outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the state of South Carolina and its communities throughout his remarkable career.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Phil Savitz has exemplified excellence both on and off the field. Graduating from A.C. Flora High School in 1973, he continued his educational journey at the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1978 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1980. In 1983, he married Jan Haltiwanger, and together they have raised two children, Zack and Erin.

Savitz’s illustrious coaching career spans over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on high school soccer in South Carolina. Beginning his coaching journey at Irmo High School in 1980, Savitz guided his teams to unparalleled success, including an impressive 15 State Championships and numerous accolades, establishing himself as a titan in the world of high school soccer. In 2014, he brought his expertise and passion to River Bluff High School, where he continued to inspire and lead until his retirement in 2024.
Among his many achievements, Savitz boasts a career high school coaching record of 806-115-7 as of 2023, making him the winningest coach in South Carolina High School Soccer history. His accolades include 24 State Final Appearances, 19-time Region Coach of the Year honors, and multiple Coach of the Year awards and Hall of Fame inductions.
The Order of the Silver Crescent, established in 1971 by Governor John C. West, symbolizes the highest ideals of service and citizenship in South Carolina. This esteemed honor is a testament to Savitz’s unwavering dedication, selfless contributions, and positive impact on the lives of countless individuals throughout the state.
