Road closures due to railroad crossing maintenance

January 20, 2017

Norfolk Southern Maintenance will begin performing upkeep on all railroad crossings this week. Maintenance on railroads occur every seven years to ensure railroad safety. The first two roads affected by railroad maintenance will take place on Friday, January 20 at Heyward St. & Whaley/ Sumter St. but the two streets will not be closed at the same time. Roads that require railroad maintenance will be closed to traffic from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 pm. Technicians onsite will be calling the transportation department (schools), 911 and a fire engineer every day to notify them of which crossings will be closed for that day.

Roads that require railroad maintenance will be closed for a day but could go longer, depending on weather and other factors. Posted detour signs will help reroute traffic. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes and plan to add additional commute time. Norfolk Southern Maintenance will try to have projects completed as soon as possible as to not drastically disturb traffic.
