Robert Ariail’s “Lowcountry” panel wins national award for best cartoon

Cartoonist Robert Ariail has been honored with a national award for best cartoon by the Association of Alternative News Media (AAN). Ariail’s “Lowcountry” panel stood out among the competition, impressing the judges with its wit, creativity, and astute observations.

The Association of Alternative News Media’s annual awards celebrate excellence in journalism within the realm of alternative news media. With millions of readers across its member organizations, AAN’s recognition honors Arial’s exemplary artistic skills but also acknowledges his ability to skillfully capture the essence of societal and political issues through his cartoons.

Ariail has won numerous awards including the National Press Foundation’s Berryman Award; the SPJ Green Eyeshade Award ( seven times ); the S.C. Press Association’s President’s Award for lifetime achievement; and the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for The Arts, South Carolina’s highest honor in the arts. Ariail has also been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize three times.

The national award adds yet another illustrious accolade to Ariail’s impressive portfolio, affirming his position as one of the foremost editorial cartoonists in the country.

The Lowcountry panel cartoon can be found weekly in The Charleston City Paper as well as across the WhosOnTheMove.com family of websites (MidlandsBiz, UpstateBizSC and LowcountryBizSC).

The AAN also recognized Charleston City Paper with four other national journalism award. Editor and publisher Andy Brack also won a first place for best political column for a group of 2022 columns ranging from discussions on abortion to candidate qualifications.
