Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery announced that Dr. Robert Browning performed the first arthroscopic cartilage transplant in the Midlands on August 17, 2026.
Cartilage restoration or transplant procedures, including MACI (Matrix Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation), have become increasingly popular treatment options for cartilage injuries.

Transplant procedures involve regrowing a patient’s own cartilage cells in an FDA-licensed laboratory and then implanting them to repair the defect. While these procedures have historically required a large incision to access the injury, recent instrumentation developments have allowed the performance of cartilage transplant via an arthroscopic approach. This method can greatly reduce post-operative pain and improve patient outcomes.
Cartilage restoration can be performed on healthy, active patients under the age of 55 who want to return to their normal activities, and has been shown to significantly improve patient outcomes with 10-year follow up.
