S.C. Bar Law for Teachers program receives national recognition

COLUMBIA, SC – June 21, 2012 – The National Association of BarExecutives (NABE) Board of Directors has selected the South CarolinaBar’s Law for Teachers program as a recipient of the 2012NABE/LexisNexis Community & Educational Outreach Award.

The award will be presented at the Thursday, August 2, during the NABE Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Law for Teachers is a free program hosted by the Bar’s Law RelatedEducation Division that is designed to give teachers an informative andpractical guide to the legal issues they face every day in theclassroom.

Understanding the law as it applies to the teaching profession iscritical for teachers of all disciplines and grade levels. This programgives them the answers they need to ensure they are acting lawfully intheir classrooms. Speakers for the program include attorneys from S.C.Dept. of Education, attorneys for school districts and contractattorneys hired by school districts.

Topics covered include the following:
·         General Education Laws
·         Tort Liability
·         Special Education
·         First Amendment Issues
·         Harassment
·         Bullying / Cyberbullying
·         Student Discipline
·         Teacher Contracts / Due Process Rights
·         Copyrights
·         Title IX

The program launched in 2006 as a two-day training and then expanded tothree days. In 2011, the Law Related Education Division producedwebinars for each topic covered by the Law for Teachers program in placeof the in-person trainings. This format allows the Division to serve agreater number of teachers, as the programs can be accessed inaccordance with their schedules with no attendance restrictions.

The S.C. Bar LRE Division, which was developed to improve the ability ofteachers to instruct law related education, has been part of the Barsince 1976.

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 14,000lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism andunderstanding of the law.
