S.C. Governor invites all South Carolinians to participate in history making tree-planting effort

April 12, 2021

S.C. Governor Henry McMaster is inviting all South Carolinians – “old, young, students, churches, community groups, everybody,” he says – to join POWERPLANTSC on Earth Day, April 22 and help set a record 3.3-plus million loblolly pine tree seeds planted across the Palmetto State.

In a public service announcement released earlier today, McMaster says, “When we do this on April 22, Thursday, we in South Carolina will have the largest single-day tree-planting in United States history.”

Conceived and directed by global expedition leader and S.C. Floodwater Commission Chairman Tom Mullikin, POWERPLANTSC will involve Boy Scouts, 4-H club members, Future Farmers of America, schools and other key participants in 46 counties, statewide.

“We are not only planting and growing trees, but this is about growing our economy and growing our state,” said S.C. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. “Through POWERPLANTSC we are now educating our children as to how important our environment is.”

The single-day statewide effort will begin with a tree-planting event hosted by Gov. McMaster at the Governor’s Mansion in Columbia on the morning of April 22.

POWERPLANTSC partners include the S.C. Forestry Commission, the S.C. Dept. of Education, the S.C. Dept. Corrections, Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, Palmetto Pride, the S.C. Association of Counties, Keep America Beautiful, Yamaha Rightwaters, Scouts BSA, the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, Columbia International University, Coastal Carolina University, and others.
