The South Carolina State Fair will host the third annual Hudson’s Heroes Tackle Hunger event at the fairgrounds Saturday, Jan. 11.

The event is a partnership with Jim Hudson Automotive Group, the Souper Bowl of Caring and Harvest Hope Food Bank.

Representatives from 20 Midlands-area high schools will gather at the fairgrounds Jan. 11 to pack 4,000 boxes of food for community members in need in conjunction with this year’s Souper Bowl of Caring, Feb. 2.

The Souper Bowl of Caring was founded by a Columbia church youth group nearly 30 years ago to support area food banks and pantries, and it quickly expanded to a national hunger relief effort. The campaign culminates around Super Bowl Sunday each year.  In recent years the event has generated around $10 million annually in food and funds. Contributions from each community across the county remain in those areas to help fight hunger.

Last year, representatives from 18 Midlands high schools packed 4,000 boxes during the second annual Hudson’s Heroes Tackle Hunger event.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership to help fight hunger in our community, and we can think of no better cause than helping supply food to those in need,” said S.C. State Fair general manager, Nancy Smith.

Jim Hudson Automotive Group is providing the food for the 4,000 boxes. Once packed, the boxes will be taken to the Harvest Hope Food Bank warehouse for distribution to families across the Midlands.

Each participating school also will have the opportunity to take food boxes back to their respective school pantries.

The South Carolina State Fair, which hosted 416,320 attendees in 2019, will run Oct. 14-25, 2020.
