Santee Cooper named Smart Energy Provider for third consecutive time

November 2, 2026

Award recognizes programs that help customers save energy, manage costs and support grid reliability

Santee Cooper’s efforts to help customers use energy more efficiently, manage their electricity costs and support a reliable electric grid have earned the utility another Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA).

The designation recognizes Santee Cooper for programs and initiatives that give customers more ways to manage their energy use while helping build a more reliable and sustainable energy future. Examples include the Rewards demand response program, Solar Share for customers who want the benefits of solar power without the equipment installation, and low-interest loans for energy-efficient equipment and renewable energy resources.

Those efforts can translate into tangible benefits for Santee Cooper customers. The Rewards program incentivizes customers to reduce their electricity use during periods of high demand, helping them manage their energy consumption while also supporting the reliability of the electric grid. Other initiatives offer customer rebates for energy-efficient equipment and provide guidance on how simple changes in energy use can make a difference.

“Santee Cooper continues to introduce new programs to help our customers become more efficient as new technology comes online,” said Marty Watson, Senior Director of Commercial and Customer Service. “We want our customers to have the best information and tools they need to make energy work better for them.”

The SEP designation recognizes utilities that demonstrate a commitment to providing safe, reliable, low-cost and sustainable electric service while preparing for the changing energy landscape.

“SEP-designated utilities have demonstrated their leadership in smart energy programs and services,” said Erin Miller, SEP Review Panel Chair. “This designation celebrates utilities that are committed to serving their customers while taking the extra step to plan for the future. Communities served by utilities that have earned the SEP designation should be proud of their utility’s accomplishments.”

Miller, Vice President of Programs and Sustainability at American Municipal Power, Inc., and Chair of the SEP Review Panel, presented the designations Oct. 28 in Louisville, Kentucky, during APPA’s annual Customer Connections Conference.

Santee Cooper has earned the SEP designation since APPA began the award in 2019, and each designation lasts three years.
