Santee Cooper President and CEO Lonnie Carter assumes APPA chairmanship

MONCKS CORNER, SC – June 27, 2010 –  Santee Cooper President andCEO Lonnie Carter assumed the chairmanship of the American Public PowerAssociation (APPA) at its National Conference in Orlando, Fla.

APPA is the service organization for the nation’s more than 2,000community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 45 millionAmericans.

It was created in 1940 as a non-profit, non-partisan organization and isgoverned by a regionally representative board of directors. Its purposeis to advance the public policy interests of its members and theirconsumers, and provide member services to ensure adequate, reliableelectricity at a reasonable price with the proper protection of theenvironment.

“Next year will be marked by stewardship of a pragmatist who is oneof the preeminent leaders of the public power industry,” said MarkCrisson, APPA president and CEO. “Lonnie leads one of the largest publicpower utilities in the nation, and he understands the fundamental needsof people who struggle to pay for electricity.”

Carter plans to use his time as 2010-2011 chairman to raise awarenessand educate members on the cost uncertainties of potential regulatorychanges in the electric industry. 

“We are in an era of unprecedented change and challenge,” saidCarter. “A wave of relentless regulatory and legislative changes atevery level – generation, transmission and distribution – is  bringingthis uncertainty and with it, higher costs to customers.”

Carter has 28 years experience in the electric utility industry, and hasbeen president and CEO of Santee Cooper since 2004. In 1997, on loanfrom Santee Cooper, he was instrumental in founding The Energy Authority(TEA) and served as its first president and CEO. Based in Jacksonville,TEA is a joint power marketing organization comprised of publicly ownedutilities.
