Savannah River Nuclear Solutions Helps Youth Discover Manufacturing
June 24, 2009AIKEN, SC – June 24, 2009 – Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC is helping the Silver Crescent Foundation in its efforts to expose more Aiken youth to the future career opportunities that exist in the burgeoning hydrogen economy as part of this week’s Camp Success. In addition to providing engineers and scientists that led educational presentations and hands-on activities like a bridge building contest and racing robots, SRNS Vice President Veasey Wilson presented Foundation President Karen Owens with a check for $4000 to support its Discover Manufacturing programs, which include Camp Success.
“Exciting young people about careers in engineering and technology are important steps in building the South Carolina’s future workforce pipeline,” Owens explained. “We certainly appreciate Savannah River Nuclear Solutions’ generosity and thank them for being active partners in our Aiken Camp Success.”
SCF President Karen Owens accepts a check for $4000 from SRNS’ Veasey Wilson to support the Aiken Camp Success. Taken at the Center for Hydrogen Research in Aiken, 18 campers are participating in the week-long academic day camp.
Hosted by USC-Aiken and Aiken Technical College, Camp Success is a week-long academic day camp that promotes career exploration and creates a link between students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and how they can make the world a better place to live. Sponsored by the Silver Crescent Foundation, the camps help young people discover a number of potential career opportunities, including important jobs in advanced manufacturing, while taking part in fun hands-on activities that bring these careers to life.
