SC Bar offers free legal clinics for Elder Law Month

Local attorneys to speak on a variety of legal issues

The SC Bar Pro Bono Program will sponsor seven free legal clinics for senior citizens across the state in May to coincide with Elder Law Month. The schedule is as follows:

Aiken

  • May 18—End of Life Issues, including healthcare power of attorney, living wills, DNR orders, power of attorney, funeral planning and cremation, presented by Christopher A. Austin. The clinic will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Aiken County Public Library (314 Chesterfield St., SW, Aiken 29801).
  • May 25—Wills, Estates, and Probate Issues, presented by William Ray Massey. The clinic will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Aiken County Public Library (314 Chesterfield St., SW, Aiken 29801).

Columbia

  • May 19—SC Bar’s Elder Law Committee, in conjunction with the Central Midlands Area Agency on Aging and USC School of Law Pro Bono Program will sponsor My Will Clinic from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Central Midlands Council of Governments (236 Stoneridge Dr. Columbia 29210).

Lancaster

  • May 9—End of Life Issues, including healthcare power of attorney, living wills, DNR orders, power of attorney, funeral planning and cremation, presented by Matthew Niemiec. The clinic will be held 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lancaster County Public Library (313 S. White St., Lancaster 29720).

McCormick

  • May 18—Identity Theft, Fraud and Scam Issues, presented by Martha S. Phillips. The clinic will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the McCormick County Senior Center (1421 S. Main St., McCormick 29835).

Myrtle Beach

  • May 9—Elder Law Issues, including long term care planning, insurance and Medicaid, presented by Angela D. Harrison. The clinic will be held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Chapin Memorial Library (400 14th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach 29577).

Spartanburg

  • May 23—End of Life Issues, including healthcare power of attorney, living wills, DNR orders, power of attorney, funeral planning and cremation, presented by Edwin C. Haskell III. The clinic will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Spartanburg County Public Library (151 S. Church St., Spartanburg 29306).

These seminars are free for anyone who would like to attend. The format typically consists of an overview followed by a question and answer session. A schedule of other upcoming seminars throughout the state is available online at www.scbar.org/clinics.
