Attorneys available to assist with advance care planning documents

COLUMBIA, SC – In observance of National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), the SC Bar Pro Bono Program and Elder Law Committee will sponsor a free Healthcare Decisions Clinic in W. Columbia on Thursday, April 16.  Lawyers will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist the public with creating healthcare power of attorney and living will documents at Brookland Baptist Church (1066 Sunset Blvd., W. Columbia).

“It’s never too early to talk to your loved ones about their wishes in any event where they can’t speak for themselves,” said Cal Watson, SC Bar President “National Healthcare Decisions Day is a great opportunity to start those tough conversations, and the SC Bar is ready to help.”

In an effort to increase the total number of South Carolinians with advance directives, Governor Nikki Haley has signed a proclamation from the SC Bar recognizing April 16, 2015 as Healthcare Decisions Day in South Carolina.

“[I] encourage all South Carolinians to work together with the medical and legal communities to ensure that an individual’s wishes for healthcare, particularly as it relates to end-of-life care, are prepared, protected and followed,” Gov. Haley said in the proclamation.

National Healthcare Decisions Day strives to demystify healthcare decision-making through public outreach. More information about NHDD and free tools to create advance directives are available online at www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org.
