SC BlueCross Hosts Free Day at Children’s Museum as Holiday Gift to Community

December 1, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Admission to EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia will be free to the public on Saturday, Dec. 20, courtesy of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina as a gift to the state.

The museum’s special exhibit, Snowville, will be on display for South Carolina BLUESM Day.

“This is our holiday gift to the community. We hope South Carolinians will enjoy a day out with family and think about giving the gift of health insurance to their loved ones by encouraging them to find coverage that is right for them,” said BlueCross President Jim Deyling.

Besides enjoying free entry to the museum, parents will be able to visit the two colorful South Carolina BLUE mobile units for education and purchasing opportunities for insurance required under the Affordable Care Act. They can drop in for one-on-one consultations or they can make appointments in advance by going to www.SCBlueRetailCenters.com.

BlueCross’ wellness staff will assist people with free body mass index (BMI) screenings and host a station where children can build healthy snacks. They also will conduct physical activity sessions for children and their parents. The University of South Carolina student athletes, Carolina Girls, cheerleaders and Gamecock mascot Cocky will be on hand.

Here is the schedule:

9:30 a.m. – Kids and parents activity session

10:30 a.m. – Insurance 101 seminar

The Affordable Care Act requires that nearly everyone hold health insurance or pay a penalty when they file their tax returns. The penalty increases for 2015 to two percent of household income or $325 per adult and $162.50 per child, whichever is greater. Plans must be purchased during Open Enrollment, Nov. 15-Feb. 15.

EdVenture museum hours on Dec. 20 are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EdVenture is at 211 Gervais St., in front of the S.C. State Museum.
