SC High School Students Vie to Win Cash and Chance to Compete in Silicon Valley

June 11, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC – Fifteen high-school students from around South Carolina will go head to head June 18th in the third annual Mark Motley Foundation State Business Plan Competition by YEScarolina. Six of the students are traveling from outside the tri-county area to compete at the competition, hosted at the College of Charleston School of Business.

“Money is the carrot that helps get the students interested in learning about entrepreneurship,” said YEScarolina Founder & President, Jimmy Bailey. And seed money is exactly what the students are coming to compete for! First place will walk away with $3,000 plus an all-expenses paid trip for the opportunity to pitch their business at the NFTE National Challengein Silicon Valley this October. One of South Carolina’s own will have the chance to win the top prize of $20,000. However, all the students agree it is more than just the money. They talk about what a life changing experience it is to stand in front of a panel of judges, pitch your business idea, and be able to network with other competitors and business owners.

In the past ten years, YEScarolina has provided entrepreneurship training to more than 700 teachers around the state, which in turn means over 14,000 students have written a business plan. Time and time again, YEScarolina students boast about the life relevant skills and confidence they have gained through their entrepreneurship class and the YEScarolina business plan competitions.

The public is invited to watch the final round of the business plan presentations on Wednesday, June 18th at 5:30 pm in the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the College of Charleston School of Business. Immediately following the competition, YEScarolina will host a reception to celebrate the winners and their 10th anniversary with food and refreshments donated by Hall’s Chophouse.
