SC Housing Achievement Awards Presented at Statewide Affordable Housing Forum

Excellence in Community Development, Building and Public Service Among the Highlights

COLUMBIA, SC – April 20, 2012 – The South Carolina State HousingFinance and Development Authority (SC State Housing) announced itsannual Housing Achievement Awards during the Awards Luncheon at thestatewide Palmetto Affordable Housing Forum held at the ColumbiaMetropolitan Convention Center. Four awards were presented to celebrateinnovation, best practices, and excellence in the affordable housingarena.

Trinity Housing Corporation for St. Lawrence Place of Columbia was recognized for the Organization Sector category;

In the first tie ever awarded, The Town of Bluffton for its Wharf Street Redevelopment Project, and Greenville’s Brookside Gardens were honored in the Housing Development category; 

The Greenville County Human Relations Commission “Building a Sound Financial Future” program was presented the Creative Partnership award; 

The Elected Official of the Year was presented to Senator Clementa Pinckney who represents Charleston, Colleton, Hampton, Beaufort and JasperCounties.  Senator Pinckney was lauded as a tireless advocate of fairhousing issues including his work in supporting affordable housing.

SC State Housing developed the awards program to recognize prominentcontributions to affordable housing for low- and low-to-moderate incomeSouth Carolinians. Nomination forms specified that entrants must havebeen instrumental in creating and supporting affordable housing,implementing housing-related programs, or helping find solutions forhousing problems. Another stipulation of the awards program is that thework honored must have been performed in South Carolina to benefit SouthCarolinians.

Executive Director Valarie M. Williams presented the awards. “SouthCarolina is a national leader in providing innovative solutions toaffordable housing,” Williams said. “There are individuals andorganizations throughout the state who consistently go the extra mileand make enormous impacts in their communities.” Mistress of CeremoniesJudi Gatson announced the winners’ accomplishments as Williamscongratulated the winners. “We’re honored to be in your company andoffer this recognition. It’s gratifying to be able to pay tribute toyour work in the business of making safe, decent, affordable housing areality,” Williams said.
