SCAA hosts engaging Legislative Reception to advocate for recurring airport funding

March 5, 2025

The South Carolina Aviation Association (SCAA) hosted a well- attended Legislative Reception on March 4 at the Capitol Center Lobby, bringing together aviation leaders and state legislators. The event, held from 5-7 p.m., provided a key opportunity for SCAA members to engage directly with elected officials about the critical role airports play in the state’s economic growth and development.

SCAA has identified sustainable airport funding as one of its top priorities for 2025, emphasizing that the state’s airports contribute a staggering $22.5 billion to South Carolina’s economy. Conversations throughout the evening built upon discussions from SCAA’s Legislative Roundtable and the Airport Economic Impact Update presented in February at the organization’s Annual Conference.

Mark Smith and James Stephens

The reception was attended by SCAA Members, the SCAA Board of Directors, including President James Stephens, as well as SC Aeronautics Commissioners and key members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, including David Martin, Scott Montgomery, Joe Bustos, Sarita Edgerton, David Hiott, Don Chapman, Mark Smith, Brian Lawson, Lee Hewitt, Case Brittain, Cody Mitchell, and Bruce Bannister. The Senate remained in session during the event, though Sen. Josh Kimbrell, who sponsored S. 675/Act 86— which credits all airline property tax revenue to the State Aviation Fund—was able to attend.

“This reception was an important opportunity to strengthen relationships with our legislators and highlight the need for dedicated airport funding,” said James Stephens, SCAA President. “The support and engagement from our members are vital as we work to ensure South Carolina’s airports continue to drive economic success and connectivity across the state.”

SCAA remains committed to advocating for South Carolina’s aviation industry and looks forward to continued collaboration with state leaders to secure the necessary resources for airports statewide.
