October 16, 2009

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – October 15, 2009 – The South Carolina Department of Agriculture has partnered with Broadway at the Beach and Clemson University Extension Service to feature a Holiday Harvest that will take place from October 24 through November 7, 2009.

The festival is designed to celebrate South Carolina community pride and showcase the bounty of South Carolina’s agricultural industry, foods, wines and culinary expertise. The Department of Agriculture will showcase the Certified SC Grown and Fresh on the Menu programs during the 15-day event.

“We are proud to be a part of this public-private partnership to showcase South Carolina agriculture and its rich heritage,” said Hugh Weathers Commissioner of Agriculture. “The goal of our Certified SC program,” he added, “is to help consumers identify and buy South Carolina produce and products. Buying local keeps dollars in the communities where they’re needed most.”

The 15-day festival will be alive with sites and activities like a massive Pumpkin Pyramid (made up of more than 3,000 pumpkins, an intriguing Hay Maze, antique tractors, hay rides and sleigh rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting and a pumpkin pie eating contest. On October 31, the Holiday Harvest will provide a safe and secure venue for parents to bring children to Trick or Treat, enjoy a haunted Hay Maze, and hear tales of South Carolina ghosts.

The festival will also offer a wide variety of activities including live entertainment, a farmers market, wine tastings of selected South Carolina wines, and educational demonstrations – all held at scheduled times throughout the event. A Carolina Cook-Off judged by a panel of regional celebrities will feature dishes made with South Carolina produce and products.
