January 5, 2016

Two Richland County residents were arrested by South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) investigators on tax charges. The charges arose during the course of a separate SCDOR investigation.

Brian DeQuincey Newman turned himself into SCDOR investigators this morning at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center for failing to timely report approximately $201,179 of income. Newman was charged with two counts of willful failure to file a tax return for tax years 2012 and 2013 and is scheduled to appear before the Honorable J. Cordell Maddox, Jr. today at 2:00 PM at the Richland County Judicial Center. If convicted, Newman faces fines up to $10,000 and/or one year in prison per charge.

Kelvin Emil Washington was arrested on three counts of willful failure to file a tax return. Washington failed to file South Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for 2012, 2013, and 2014, failing to report $426,776 of income. Washington turned himself into SCDOR investigators this morning and is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center pending a bond hearing. If convicted, he faces fines up to $10,000 and/or one year in prison per charge.

“The public deserves accountability from its government and elected officials,” said Rick Reames, director of the South Carolina Department of Revenue. “The Department will force this accountability by taking action against those who violate the law.”
