SCDOR Offers Steps to Request a Replacement if You’re Missing Your State Tax Refund

June 29, 2025

If you filed your South Carolina Individual Income Tax return and expected a refund that hasn’t arrived, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) has outlined clear steps for taxpayers to report a missing refund and request a replacement.

Check Your Refund Status First

Before submitting a replacement request, the SCDOR advises taxpayers to check the status of their refund using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool available at dor.sc.gov/refund. If your refund was sent via direct deposit and you have not received it, it is recommended to contact your bank. If the refund was issued as a paper check and more than 30 days have passed since the issue date, you may be eligible to request a replacement.

How to Request a Replacement Refund

Taxpayers who believe their refund check has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, or who simply never received it after 30 days, can request a replacement using one of two methods:

  1. Online through MyDORWAY (recommended)

    • Log in or register at MyDORWAY.

    • Access your Individual Income Tax account and select “More Account Options.”

    • Click “Report a Missing Refund” and follow the prompts to request a new check or provide banking information for direct deposit.

    • If you’re missing multiple refunds, you can include all of them in one request.

  2. By Mail

    • Download and complete Form SC3911 – Individual Income Tax Refund Tracer, available at dor.sc.gov/forms.

    • Mail the completed form to the address listed on the form’s instructions. Please note that mailed requests may take longer to process.

Processing Timeline

Once your request has been submitted, allow up to six weeks for processing. Taxpayers using MyDORWAY can track their request by logging in and selecting “More” followed by “Search Submissions.”

Choose Direct Deposit for Faster Refunds

The SCDOR recommends choosing direct deposit when filing future tax returns. It is a faster, safer, and more efficient method for receiving refunds and minimizes the risk of lost or stolen checks.
