SCDOT Announces East Butler Road Bridge Closure Over I-385 for Rehabilitation Work

June 3, 2026

Commuters in Greenville County are being advised to prepare for significant traffic disruptions later this month. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced a complete closure of East Butler Road (S-23-107) to accommodate an extensive bridge rehabilitation project.

The closure will directly affect the bridge structure crossing over Interstate 385, a vital traffic artery connecting local residents to the highway corridor.

Construction Timeline and Reopening Dates

The construction crew is scheduled to shut down the roadway starting Monday, June 15, 2026.

Engineers plan to execute comprehensive infrastructure repairs and preventative preservation work during the shutdown. Barring severe weather or unforeseen structural complications, the bridge is expected to officially reopen to vehicular traffic on August 5, 2026.

Detour Map and Commuter Impact

Because the bridge overpass will be fully blocked to traffic in both directions, motorists traveling through the Mauldin area will be diverted away from the construction zone.

SCDOT has established an official detour route to assist drivers in navigating around the interstate overpass:

  • Detour Length: The designated detour route will add approximately 4 miles to standard travel times.

  • Travel Advisory: Local law enforcement and transport officials are urging drivers to map out alternative routes well in advance, expect heavy morning and evening delays along adjacent side streets, and exercise extreme caution when traveling near construction workers.

The rehabilitation initiative is part of a broader infrastructure push across Greenville County aimed at extending the service life of aging overpasses, removing vehicle load restrictions, and improving long-term public safety for regional transit.
