Empowering women to make a difference

COLUMBIA, SC – Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson and Councilwoman Julie Ann Dixon are inviting all young women to apply for the National Foundation for Women Legislators and the National Rifle Association Scholarship.

The 17th Annual NFWL/NRA Bill of Rights Essay Scholarship contest is open to young women from the Class of 2015. The six winners whose essays are selected will receive an award, a $3,000 scholarship, and an all-expense-paid trip to NFWL’s 2014 Annual Conference being held in Philadelphia, PA, November 19-22, 2014.

“Education is important for everyone, but it is especially significant for girls and women. This is true not only because education is an entry point to other opportunities, but also because the educational achievements of women can have ripple effects within the family and across generations,” stated Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson.

This year’s topic asks applicants to apply the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to an issue currently being debated and how their issue affects women.

“During the late 1800’s women fought for equal protection of our civil liberties and won at least the battle. The most efficient way to ensure we sustain our equality and continue to win the war is through education; education provides women with a level of empowerment that no one can remove from them,” stated Councilwoman Julie Ann Dixon.
