Scholarships available Jazz Combo Camp!

June 2, 2023

The Charleston Jazz Academy is offering four weeks of Jazz Combo Camp in June and July.  The camps are a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to hone their skills and learn from experienced jazz musicians. Scholarships are available for students who may not otherwise have the means to attend to ensure that students from all backgrounds can pursue their passion for jazz music. The Jazz Combo Camp is an excellent program that not only teaches music but also fosters a sense of community and inspires young musicians to reach their full potential.

This 5-day camp is designed for students in grades 7–12  interested in learning improvisational skills by playing in a jazz combo with similarly skilled peers. Each week is taught by a team of accomplished jazz musicians and educators, including guests from jazz programs at the College of Charleston, University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina University, and Berklee College of Music, who will visit with the students for a masterclass. The camp consists of daily two-hour combo sessions, basic jazz theory classes, and one evening concert after each week.  Additionally, each student receives one additional 45-minute private or small-group (sectional) instructional session focused on her/his instrument.

The camp is designed for students who can read music and want to advance their playing and improvisational skills. The standard jazz combo consists of piano, bass, guitar, drums and one or two “horns” (sax, trumpet, trombone, etc.) but there are no restrictions on what instruments may participate.
