School board candidate forum to be held for contested seats

October 10, 2016

The public is invited to attend a school board candidate forum featuring candidates for two contested seats on the Greenville County Schools’ Board of Trustees that will be on the November 8, 2016 General Election ballot.

The event is sponsored by Public Education Partners, District 1 PTA, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, and the League of Women Voters of Greenville County. Every candidate in Districts 19 and 25 has been invited to participate, and each will have the opportunity to answer every question. Nathaniel Cary, education reporter with The Greenville News, will moderate the forum. The event will be recorded and broadcast on the Greenville County Schools TV channel prior to the election.

The forum is on October 11 at Berea High School, beginning at 7:00 p.m., and will last no more than an hour. District 19 incumbent Debi Bush is challenged by Myra Yeargin Gallagher and Charles E. Winfield. District 25 incumbent Kenneth E. Baxter, Sr. is challenged by Michelle Goodwin Calwile.

A scheduled forum for two candidates from District 21, set for October 18, has been cancelled. Public Education Partners was only able to confirm the attendance of incumbent Danna Rohleder. Mrs. Rohleder has been invited to attend the October 11 event and introduce herself to those in attendance.

All candidates for the three districts had the opportunity to respond to a questionnaire from the four sponsoring organizations. The public can read candidate responses at the Public Education Partners website: www.pepgc.org.

Joy Grayson (District 17), Glenda Morrison-Fair (District 23), and Crystal Ball O’Connor (District 27) are running unopposed and will not be participating in the candidate forum.

School board elections are non-partisan. Candidates run without a political party affiliation. There is no run-off election. No matter the number of candidates in a district, the candidate with the most votes wins.
