July 5, 2026
Lexington-Richland School District Five officially celebrated the opening of the new East Wing at Irmo High School International School for the Arts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking another milestone in the district’s commitment to providing exceptional learning environments for students.
District leaders, school administrators, elected officials, community members, students, and staff gathered to commemorate the completion of the new addition, which features 60 new classrooms and labs, a new library, and administrative offices designed to support student learning and enhance the educational experience.
The 123,000-square-foot East Wing is designed to serve up to 1,068 students. By comparison, the previous wing served 844 students in approximately 160,000 square feet. The new facility’s modern design creates more efficient, flexible learning spaces that accommodate more students while using significantly less square footage.
“This new East Wing represents our continued investment in the future of our students and our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross, Sr. “These modern learning spaces will provide our students and staff with the resources they need to innovate, collaborate, and excel for years to come. We are excited to open this beautiful facility and continue building on Irmo High School’s tradition of excellence.”
Irmo High School Principal Dr. Kaaren Hampton said the expansion will have a lasting impact on the school community.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees toured the new facility and explored the state-of-the-art learning spaces designed to meet the needs of current and future students.
The next phase of the project features a new cafeteria which is expected to open in the fall.
