Science Café: Improving Drug Safety with Dr. Charles Bennett at Speakeasy on June 11, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – June 11, 2013 – EngenuitySC’s popular networking event and lecture series continues with a talk on improving drug safety by SmartState Endowed Chair Dr. Charles Bennett on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Speakeasy cocktail bar in Five Points.

 In a relaxed, pub environment which encourages audience questions and discussion, Dr. Bennett will discuss current his work toward preventing adverse drug events and improving medication safety in connection with National Safety Month and Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Week.

Dr. Bennett is the SmartState Endowed Chair in Medication Safety and Efficacy at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. A hematologist and oncologist, Dr. Bennett’s research focuses on ways to make drug information more consumer-friendly and creating new training tools for healthcare providers.

Dr. Bennett has first-hand experience with commercializing technology and starting new companies. In 1998, he founded internationally known RADAR (Research on Adverse Drug events And Reports), which investigates and disseminates information about adverse drug and device reactions. During the last decade, the company’s work has identified potentially fatal and previously unreported side effects associated with more than 40 drugs. On the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., knowledge economy movers and shakers convene at Science Café at Speakeasy to enjoy high quality adult beverages and hear free talks by some of South Carolina’s top leaders in medicine, technology and innovation.
