Science & Math Governor’s School to Honor Milliken & Company with the 2016 Townes Award

March 8, 2016

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics will honor Milliken & Company with the 2016 Townes Award during the School’s 24th annual Townes Toast with a Twist event. The event will take place on Thursday, March 17, 6-9:30 p.m. at Daniel Island Club, 600 Island Park Drive, Charleston, SC, 29492.

Townes ToastNamed for the late Dr. Charles H. Townes, South Carolina native and Nobel Laurate in physics, the Townes Award is presented annually to South Carolina businesses, institutions or individuals, like Dr. Townes, who take aspirations of innovation and leadership to the highest level in research, development, technology, business, education or public service.

Milliken has long led the way for “knowledge-based” investment, employing more than 100 PhDs, and accumulating over 2,200 U.S. patents – and more than 5,000 patents worldwide – since their founding in 1865. With 39 manufacturing facilities in the U.S., U.K., Belgium, France and China, and with other sales and service operations throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, Milliken’s nearly 7,000 associates work to create entirely new customer experiences, build for the future and create products that do good for the world.“Since the company was founded more than 150 years ago, Milliken has been a leader in innovation across the globe,” said Kim Bowman, GSSM Foundation CEO. “Their core values and strategies perfectly align to pave the way for new discoveries designed to improve the way people live and work. We could not be more honored to celebrate Milliken’s innovative leadership and success with this year’s Townes Award.”

By combining science with design and insights, Milliken tackles the issues and concerns of society today. The company’s community of innovators is invigorated by the challenge of finding creative ways to enhance people’s lives and make the world easier, safer and more sustainable.

This year’s reinvented Townes Toast with a Twist will celebrate Milliken during an evening of 1940s-style glitz and glam, featuring big band music, bourbon tasting and high cuisine.

Tickets to the event are $195 for the general public and $165 for Business Leadership Network members. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.scgssm.org/events or call803.252.9152.
