Senior Issues Group and Upstate Mobility Alliance to host transportation panel for Upstate seniors
July 19, 2021Upcoming Event Will Provide Information on Various Transportation Options for Elders throughout the Upstate
On Monday, July 19th at 11:30 a.m., the Senior Issues Group, an initiative of Ten at the Top, and Upstate Mobility Alliance, will present a panel on transportation safety options for seniors. Event panelists include Dr. Johnell Brooks, Associate Professor at Clemson University and Department of Medicine at Greenville Medical Center, Nicole McAden, Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Greenlink, and Keith Moody, Transit-General Manager of Senior Solutions. Remarks will also be made by James Bennett, Owner and Manager of Upstate Home Care Solutions, addressing transportation options for older adults, and maximizing their safety on the road. Sponsored by AARP, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and Upstate Home Care Solutions, this free event is open to the public and specifically designed for senior care providers and seniors.
“People often wrongly assume that seniors aren’t active and social. But, not only are people continuing to work past the typical retirement age, they are also continuing to commute to healthcare appointments, the grocery store and pharmacy, the barber shop and salon appointments, volunteer opportunities, social engagements, and more,” said Nicole McAden, Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Greenlink. “Between January and March 2021, approximately 23% of all Greenlink bus route riders qualified for a reduced rate discount as a senior, as someone with a disability, or as a Medicare recipient. 23% of all Greenlink’s riders in 2019 totaled to 183,850 trips. That’s more than 180,000 trips taken by seniors and people with disabilities, proving transportation is an important resource in our community.”
For the aging population in the Upstate, finding safe alternatives for transportation is key to maximizing independence and social connectivity. Since data consistently shows that driving becomes riskier with age, transportation has been identified as a primary barrier our seniors continue to face. Senior Issues Group strives to resolve this problem by offering programs that teach seniors how to live to their full potential. Guest speakers and panelists, James Bennett, Dr. Johnell Brooks, Nicole McAden, and Keith Moody, will answer questions and provide additional information on transportation opportunities in the Upstate.
“Business Bureau of the Upstate is excited about the TATT opportunity to bring seniors, community leaders, and senior professionals together to discuss transportation options for our seniors here in the Upstate,” said Vee Daniel, President of BBB of the Upstate.
