Senior Matters workshop helps residents plan for aging
September 20, 2026Local professionals shared guidance on care, housing, finances, insurance, estate planning, relocation and real estate.
When Zane Meadors learned his father was battling Alzheimer’s, he had to make life-changing decisions quickly. The real estate professional turned to experts for guidance and now hopes to connect area residents with the resources they need to plan for aging—whether for loved ones or themselves.
Held Sept. 16 at the Pawleys Island YMCA, the Senior Matters workshop brought together seven local professionals specializing in elder care advocacy, senior living, financial and estate planning, insurance, relocation services and real estate. The program addressed a growing need as the population of older adults increases across Horry and Georgetown counties.
Speakers encouraged attendees to consider what they want later life to look like and to make plans before a crisis occurs. Research, open family conversations and guidance from trusted professionals can make difficult transitions more manageable.
Workshop Highlights
Elder care advocacy: Kelly Jayroe of Palmetto Elder Advocates(opens in new tab) described serving as a local resource for families—especially those who live out of state—by coordinating care, monitoring clients’ health and safety, and sharing the information needed to make informed decisions.
Senior living: Andrea Tehan of Arbor Landings at Pawleys(opens in new tab) reviewed options ranging from independent living and assisted living to memory care and skilled nursing. With monthly costs ranging from about $3,000 to $15,000, she advised families to tour several communities, ask questions and assess the quality of communication and support.
Relocation services: Charlene Blanton of Caring Transitions(opens in new tab) contrasted a well-planned move with one complicated by medical emergencies and delayed decisions. Her company helps clients sort belongings, sell or donate unneeded items, and set up their new homes for a smoother transition.
Financial planning: Andy Friedman of Signature Wealth Strategies(opens in new tab) addressed a common retirement concern: “Will my money last as long as I do?” He helps clients align their assets with their retirement goals and urged families to share secure access to accounts, planning documents, final wishes, passwords and multifactor authentication codes.
Estate planning: Tom Winslow of the Winslow Law (opens in new tab) emphasized the importance of wills, trusts, durable and health care powers of attorney, and living wills. He also recommended naming a probate administrator and personal representative to carry out those plans.
Insurance and Medicare: Ruth Keilen of the Keilen Group encouraged attendees to work with a trusted local agent or broker who understands enrollment periods and potential penalties. She also cautioned against unsolicited callers who may misrepresent themselves and recommend policy changes that reduce essential coverage.
Real estate: Meadors, broker-in-charge at Pawleys Island Realty(opens in new tab), advised homeowners to understand current market conditions and consult an agent before undertaking costly renovations solely to increase a sale price. Professional guidance, he said, can help families choose the best strategy for their next chapter.
Organizers plan to offer Senior Matters regularly. The next workshop is scheduled for Jan. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Pawleys Island YMCA meeting space.
