Senior Resources receives donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

July 14, 2021

Senior Resources has received $3,000 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed local neighbors in their time of need and serve the increased demand for home-delivered meals service in our community. Senior Resources will use the gift to support our Meals on Wheels program and our ongoing efforts to eliminate hunger among seniors in our community. The funding will provide approximately 384 nutritionally balanced meals to our Meals on Wheels clients. The meals are delivered to clients’ homes each day by Meals on Wheels volunteers, and they provide one-third of the daily nutritional requirements for these home-bound clients.

“This support will help us meet the basic needs of homebound seniors who are not able to sustain a healthy and nutritious diet,” said Andrew Boozer, Executive Director of Senior Resources.” In many cases, the meal our volunteers deliver is the only meal of the day for the seniors we serve. The support of the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation means that seniors in our community will have the nutrition they need to stay healthy in their own homes.”

As the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County, Senior Resources has experienced a 233% increase in home-delivered meals since the outbreak of the pandemic and has provided 518,099 meals (706% meal increase) when including emergency meals. Our Meals on Wheels program is delivering over 400 hot meals each day and 200 frozen meals weekly to seniors in need. In addition to meeting the nutritional needs of home-bound seniors, our Meals on Wheels program also addresses the social isolation felt by many of our clients now more than ever. This donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation will allow Senior Resources to continue to fulfill the increased volume of meal deliveries, and provide an environment to allow us to sustain this increase in demand.

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants.
