Senior Resources receives donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

January 13, 2020

Senior Resources has received $2500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents.  Senior Resources will use the gift to provide approximately 340 hot, nutritionally balanced meals to home-bound seniors and disabled adults.

“The donation from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation meets the challenge of senior hunger head-on by providing funds necessary to feed older adults who need nutritious meals.  Senior hunger can be easy to hide or ignore but it is a serious issue for our community.  I am thankful for the support of Food Lion to provide these meals to seniors as we start the new year,” said Andrew Boozer, Executive Director of Senior Resources.

With a corps of more than 300 volunteers, the Meals on Wheels program delivers a hot, nutritious meal each day to clients’ homes. The balanced meals provide one-third of the daily nutritional recommended allowances for home-bound clients.

According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH), South Carolina ranks eighth-worst in the nation for senior citizens who are threatened with food instability. Nearly 17 percent of South Carolina’s senior citizens are threatened with hunger, according to a 2018 report from NFESH. Senior Resources is the only provider of Meals on Wheels services in Richland County.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $12 million in grants.
