Senior Resources to celebrate local seniors in honor of National Senior Citizens Day

August 20, 2020

National Senior Citizens Day will be celebrated nationwide on Friday, August 21. At Senior Resources we will recognize the gifts that seniors bring our community by showering them with notes of encouragement and love from our staff and volunteers throughout the day. We will also host a Day of Giving and will be accepting donations to provide necessary food assistance to our Meals on Wheels clients along with other vulnerable seniors in Richland County, and to further support our programs.

“National Senior Citizens Day reminds us all that seniors are a valued and vital part of our community,” said Andrew Boozer, Executive Director of Senior Resources. “Senior Resources continues to step forward to serve these older adults in the midst of a pandemic and beyond. As we honor these older adults on this special day, I invite you to join in this celebration by donating to our Day of Giving. Each dollar stays right here in our community to provide meals, activities, personal care, and services that help our elderly neighbors stay healthy and age with dignity.”

With seniors being at the forefront of this pandemic, the need for services continues to increase. A joint partnership between Senior Resources and the Columbia Housing Authority was announced earlier this week, that will provide meals and masks to 323 senior citizen residents on a weekly basis now through the week of November 16. The Senior Meals and Masks program will feed seniors that reside in four housing units through the Columbia Housing Authority. They will receive two frozen meals and a supplemental package of milk, fruit and a cookie. Our menus are carefully planned by our caterer, Iacafano’s Catering and Food Service, in consultation with a nutritionist, to meet one-third of the daily nutritional needs of senior citizens. These nutritionally-rich, ready to eat meals help to alleviate trips to the grocery store and help to keep seniors healthy and independent.
