Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands Announces Walk a Mile Grand Marshal and Community Partner Awards

COLUMBIA, SC—Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands announced the 2015 Walk a Mile in Their Shoes Grand Marshal and the recipients of the 2015 Community Partner Awards.

This year Connor Shaw, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, will serve as the 2015 Grand Marshall for Walk a Mile in Their Shoes. Connor Shaw is the winningest quarterback in University of South Carolina history. STSM Executive Director Ginny Waller says, “We are honored to work with Connor Shaw to make this year’s Walk a Mile bigger and better than ever. Connor is known for being a strong leader and this is a great tie in to the NFL’s Say No More To Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault campaign.”

 

 

As part of his Grand Marshal duties, Connor Shaw will present the 2015 Community Partner Awards. Community Partner Awards are presented each year to programs that demonstrate a continued commitment to supporting survivors of sexual assault and working to identify and prevent sexual violence. The 2015 Community Partners include: Transitions, Columbia College, the University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety, and Central Carolina Technical College.

Other award recipients include Patrick Anderson as Volunteer of the Year and John Wilkinson as Board Member of the Year. Attorney General Alan Wilson will be recognized as the Public Servant of the Year.

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands Executive Director Ginny Waller says, “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes is our largest event during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There is no better time to honor the leaders in our community who dedicate themselves throughout the year to empowering survivors of sexual assault and ending violence in our community.”

The awards will be presented on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at approximately 6:30p.m. during Walk a Mile in Their Shoes. Walk a Mile in Their Shoes festivities take place at the SC State House Grounds.

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM), formerly named Rape Crisis Network, is a private, nonprofit, United Way member agency committed to providing free, direct services to survivors of sexual assault and abuse, including 24-hour crisis hotline, hospital accompaniment, court accompaniment, personal advocacy, individual and group counseling, and education about sexual trauma issues.
