Shutt selected for membership in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers

June 29, 2026

Nekki Shutt, a founding partner of Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, has been elected as a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. She was the only South Carolina attorney selected in the most-recent voting.

Currently serving as president of the SC Bar, Shutt has been a South Carolina Supreme Court-certified employment law specialist for more than 15 years. Her practice encompasses the full range of employment law areas, including discrimination, harassment, fair pay, wage disputes, and wrongful termination. She’s a skilled litigator with experience in landmark cases, including the lawsuit that paved the way for marriage equality in South Carolina. Additionally, she practices employee benefits law under federal ERISA and similar South Carolina laws covering life insurance, health insurance, and disability claims.

A decades-old organization that honors outstanding professionals who have made sustained contributions to employment law, the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers has a rigorous selection process. It begins with nominations from two current members. Next, a Credentials Committee of attorneys practicing in the same federal court district evaluates the candidate. The college’s board of governors makes final selections.

To be eligible, attorneys must have 20 years of employment law practice. They must demonstrate professional skills and leadership, a commitment to high-quality professional service, significant evidence of teaching or writings about employment law, and high ethical standards.
