Simpsonville downtown project officially underway following ceremonial groundbreaking

Construction on Downtown Simpsonville’s highly anticipated revitalization project is officially underway following a ceremonial groundbreaking held Tuesday, August 4.

Local leadership, members of the Simpsonville City Council, and representatives from Thrift Development gathered in the downtown district with gold shovels in hand to mark the formal start of the major infrastructure initiative.

While the groundbreaking marked the official celebration, initial physical work on the multi-phase project actually kicked off prior to the ceremony. The first phase of construction centers on infrastructure and traffic flow adjustments along the city’s main thoroughfare, beginning with the removal of four concrete islands along Main Street.

The project aims to improve accessibility, enhance traffic safety, and modernize the downtown corridor to better support local businesses and heavy pedestrian traffic in the heart of Simpsonville.

With active demolition and earth-moving equipment operating along Main Street, local commuters and visitors should prepare for altered traffic patterns throughout the first phase of construction.

• Intermittent Lane Closures: As crews work to remove the four concrete median islands, expect temporary single-lane closures and shifting traffic patterns along Main Street, particularly during non-peak daytime hours.

• Pedestrian & Crosswalk Shifts: Sidewalk access and crosswalk routings near the primary construction footprint may be periodically adjusted to ensure safety around heavy machinery.

• Recommended Alternate Routes: Drivers traveling through Simpsonville who do not need to access downtown businesses are encouraged to utilize NE Main Street / SC-14, West Georgia Road, or I-385 to bypass potential delays along the core strip.
