Singleton Baseball Complex continues towards completion

As the greater Charleston community prepares to remember the second anniversary of the Emanuel AME shooting, work continues at Charleston Southern University on the Singleton Baseball Complex.
“Just as Sharonda Coleman-Singleton provided a home for her son, Chris, this facility will provide CSU baseball players with a home,” says Tyler Davis, assistant athletic director for development.
The facilities Enrichment Center will celebrate Sharonda Coleman-Singleton’s life and serve as a gathering space for athletes to learn and grow spiritually and academically. The Singleton Baseball Complex memorial plaza will feature a “Love is Stronger” memorial. All those who died in Emanuel AME will be remembered. The site will also recognize CSU baseball Hall of Fame athletes and players who have played Major League Baseball.
The first floor of the complex will house a locker room, training room and the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Enrichment Center. The second floor will include the head coach’s office and conference space for team personnel.
“Our sincere desire is that future generations will see that the Singleton Baseball Complex is more than a building, but is a symbol of love and hope,” says President Jairy C. Hunter.
It was Chris Singleton, a CSU outfielder, who uttered the words that “love is always stronger than hate” the night after his mother died while attending a Bible study at Emanuel AME. The world heard those words and immediately felt connected to the nurturing nature of a woman raising Chris and his two siblings. In the recent Major League Baseball draft, Chris was selected in the 19th round by the Chicago Cubs.
The $1.9 million dollar project is expected to be completed before next baseball season. The university broke ground on the project in October of 2016.
