Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awards $496,500 in Grants

COLUMBIA, SC – The Sisters of Charity Foundation awards $496,500 to twelve grantees addressing the root causes of poverty in South Carolina.
The Foundation’s mission to address generational poverty is reflected in its decisions made in the area of grant making. The Foundation works with grantee organizations to affect organizational and community impact at multiple levels and views these grants as a partnership with each grantee to enhance results, maximize resources and to insure that measurable change occurs. The Foundation focuses on three broad categories of health, education and social services.
“These grants allow the Foundation to be more intentional with its grant making,” said Tom Keith, president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. “Now instead of just funding good programs, we are assessing the programs for greater depth and impact when it comes to how well they address the root causes of poverty, both generational and systemic.”
The twelve organizations are:
University of South Carolina Educational Foundation – South Carolina Collaborative for Racial Reconciliation – The mission of the Collaborative is to foster racial reconciliation and civic renewal through ongoing dialogues on university campuses and in communities requesting assistance with problems and issues of race.
Clemson University Youth Learning Institute – 2016 Empowering Girls Conference – This conference is offered to young ladies impacted by the foster care system through South Carolina Department of Social Services.
University of South Carolina – College of Social Work – Poverty Factor Training Series – Funding is requested to support the Poverty Factor Training Series for faculty and staff of the USC College of Social Work.
Teach My People – Our afterschool and summer programs provide services to 112 “at-risk” students from the Waccamaw schools in Georgetown County; continuing the mission of helping students overcome generational poverty, and reaching their full, God-given potential.
Healthy Learners – Champions for Children Golf Tournament
Saint Joseph Catholic School – New Teacher Support Program – This program includes mentoring, coaching and induction opportunities for new teachers.
Community Foundation of the Lowcountry – Project SAFE provides grants to low-to-moderate-income property owners for connection of their property to public sewer operations, enabling them to eliminate aging and failing septic systems.
The Free Medical Clinic – The Free Medical Clinic, Inc. provides primary medical care, specialty medical care, and pharmacy services to persons who live at or below 138% of the Federal poverty level and who have no health insurance.
South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health – The Health Policy Fellows Program is a signature offering of the SC Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH). This program provides educational opportunities for elected officials to receive fact-based information on the health issues and challenges of our state and to gain a better understanding of how healthcare is delivered and financed.
South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families – the Center and six well-established, local fatherhood programs ensure father-centered, community-based quality services delivered in a respectful, non-judgmental environment.
Central Carolina Community Foundation – 2016 Male Achievement Conference
Family Shelter – Emergency housing, food, shelter, resources, and hope to homeless families in Columbia. Family Shelter provides emergency shelter for the entire family unit, allowing fathers and young men to stay with their families while they fight their way out of homelessness.
