Six Local Students Represent Laurens Electric on Washington Youth Tour
June 18, 2025Laurens County teens join over 2,000 students from across the nation for a week in D.C.
Six rising high school seniors from Laurens Electric Cooperative’s service area have joined 71 other South Carolina students in Washington, D.C. this week for the 2025 Washington Youth Tour, a prestigious leadership program now in its 61st year.
They are among more than 2,000 youth delegates, chaperones, and cooperative staff from 44 states who are participating in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Sponsored by local electric cooperatives, the Washington Youth Tour allows students to explore the nation’s capital, meet with members of Congress, and gain a firsthand understanding of the democratic process and the role electric cooperatives play in shaping energy policy.
The program is designed to empower the next generation of leaders by blending civic education with real-world experiences. Throughout the week, delegates visit iconic landmarks including the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, Smithsonian museums, and national monuments. They also engage in leadership training and meet peers from across the country.
Laurens Electric Cooperative’s student delegates were selected through a competitive application and interview process based on academic achievement, community involvement, and leadership potential.
“This program is about more than just sightseeing—it’s about preparing these young leaders to understand how our government works and how they can make a difference,” said Jim Donahoo, Laurens Electric’s Vice President of Marketing and Economic Development. “We are proud to support their journey and look forward to the impact they’ll have in their communities.”
Since its inception, the Washington Youth Tour has introduced thousands of students to public service, civic responsibility, and the power of cooperative principles. For Laurens Electric Cooperative, it remains a cornerstone investment in youth and leadership development.
