September 19, 2008

COLUMBIA, SC – September 19, 2009 – Michael J. Skarupa, who has more than 29 years of experience in the health insurance industry, has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of insurance claims processor PGBA, LLC, a subsidiary of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

Skarupa, a Greenville, S.C., native, began his career in the Government Programs Division of BlueCross in 1979 after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in business administration. He held management positions with BlueCross and PGBA, serving most recently as vice president for PGBA’s Florence, S.C., operations.

Skarupa will continue to work out of the Florence office. He is responsible for all aspects of PGBA, including contract administration, compliance, budgeting, staffing and procurement activities. PGBA is one of the nation’s largest health insurance claims processors, handling claims for Medicare Advantage plans and the Department of Defense’s TRICARE program.

Skarupa takes over leadership of PGBA from William J. Meyer, who retired after serving as senior officer of PGBA for more than 24 years.

“I look forward to continuing and building upon our tradition of outstanding service to the deserving military families and Medicare beneficiaries that we serve,” Skarupa said. “Our success is due to the dedicated and valued associates who share our vision of service excellence.”

Skarupa has assisted the Department of Defense with the successful implementation of many complex initiatives, including the introduction of new technologies, benefits and programs.
