SLED Urges Public to Stay Vigilant and Report Suspicious Activity

January 5, 2025

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is urging residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicious activity, following recent security threats in the Southeast, including incidents in New Orleans and Greenville, South Carolina.

On New Year’s Day, a tragic attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans prompted federal and local authorities to investigate potential links to terrorism. Closer to home, Greenville County law enforcement responded to a bomb threat involving an 18-wheeler stopped on I-85. Although the threat was ultimately deemed not credible, it served as a stark reminder of the importance of community awareness and rapid reporting.

SLED emphasized the critical role the public plays in ensuring safety, highlighting the importance of the “See Something, Say Something” principle. “If you see something unusual or concerning, do not hesitate to contact local law enforcement,” a SLED spokesperson said. “Even small details can make a big difference in preventing threats and protecting lives.”

The agency has underscored that timely reporting of suspicious behavior—whether it’s an unattended item, unusual activity, or concerning conversations—can enable law enforcement to respond effectively. Residents are encouraged to trust their instincts and err on the side of caution.

As security concerns persist, SLED remains committed to working closely with local and federal agencies. The agency continues to encourage South Carolinians to be partners in public safety, emphasizing that everyone has a role in keeping their communities safe.
