Race security and connectivity taken to new heights thanks to intense network preparations and planning.

CHARLESTON, SC – After months of intense planning and preparation for the 2015 Cooper River Bridge Run, Verizon Wireless reports strong and reliable network performance during last Saturday’s race. Verizon’s 4G network with XLTE technology streamed live video from cameras placed along the race route so race officials, City of Charleston and the Town of Mt. Pleasant could closely monitor all activity before, during and after the race from a secure command center.

Verizon’s network team increased capacity for data on cell towers serving the race route and deployed a Cell onWheels (COW), which is a self-contained, generator-powered mobile cell site capable of processing thousands of calls and data transmissions simultaneously.   Verizon’s network managed approximately 250,000 calls and 15,000,000 data sessions during the event.

“We worked closely for months with the State Law Enforcement Division, Charleston County, City of Charleston and Town of Mt. Pleasant and many others to identify the race needs and adjust our network so our wireless infrastructure was capable of providing critical information to race organizers,” said Serg Mislevy, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless. “The safety of race participants, volunteers and spectators depended on it.”

In addition to the behind the scenes planning Verizon did with race organizers and city officials, Verizon alsoboosted the amount of XLTE technology serving the Charleston area, effectively tripling the network capacity available for race participants and spectators to call, text and connect. For the very first time, race participants used wireless technology for instant race results by scanning a QR code with their smartphones.
