May 11, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP is pleased to announce that Emily McPeters, an Furman undergraduate, has been selected as the winner of the firm’s juried art competition. The exhibition opened in April and ran through May 8, 2015. Nearly twenty Furman University undergraduate and graduate students submitted three-dimensional pieces of work. The winning piece will become part of Smith Moore Leatherwood’s permanent collection.

“This competition demonstrated the incredible artistic talents of the Furman University art students,” said Tami McKnew, attorney at Smith Moore Leatherwood. “The twenty entries exceeded our first-year expectations, and we hope that this annual competition will continue to grow and encourage students to embrace the arts. Congratulations to Emily McPeters and to all the students who entered the competition.”

Ross McClain, Chair of the Furman University Department of Art, commented, “It’s a challenge for our department to find partners to showcase our talent in downtown Greenville. Smith Moore Leatherwood took a small bet on our students and our program. We are honored and grateful to the firm and hope to continue this collaboration next year.”

The theme of the competition was “Justice.” McPeter’s piece, Maat, represented the Egyptian goddess who presided over a person’s final judgment to ensure a fair trial, weighing the deceased’s heart against a feather to determine one’s fate in the afterlife. In her artist’s statement she explained, “In justice, an unbiased judgement is needed. That is the cornerstone of ideal justice.”
