April 11, 2016

Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP hosted the second annual Furman University student art competition and opening reception on Friday evening, April 8. More than twenty Furman students submitted two and three-dimensional mediums, ranging from photography to sculptural pieces, which were showcased at the firm’s Greenville office during the reception and will continue to be on display through Friday, May 6.

Kaitlyn Cothran, a Furman sophomore, was selected as the winner of the competition for her medium titled, “Caverna na Montanha.” Her winning piece was purchased by the firm and will become part of Smith Moore Leatherwood’s permanent collection. Additionally, Aaron Navarro, a Furman junior, was awarded honorable mention for his collection of digital and film photography.

“We are incredibly honored to sponsor the second annual Furman University juried art competition,” said Tami McKnew, attorney at Smith Moore Leatherwood. “We hope to continue our partnership with the local university, and support and encourage young artists in the Upstate. Congratulations to Kaitlyn, Aaron, and to all the students who participated in the competition.”

“What is exceptional about this experience is finding a public partner that understands the value of applied learning,” said Ross McClain, chair of the Furman University Department of the Art. “Smith Moore Leatherwood gives Furman art students a pathway to practice outside of the classroom.”
