Smith Moore Leatherwood welcomes attorney Kristin Gutting

Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP announced the addition of attorney Kristin Gutting. Gutting will be working with the firm’s tax group in the Charleston, S.C. and Atlanta, Ga. offices.

Gutting represents corporations, partnerships and individuals in all phases of tax planning and controversy, including IRS and state Department of Revenue audits, appeals and tax litigation. Her work encompasses many aspects of federal and state and local tax controversy and planning. Gutting advises clients on complicated tax matters, seeking to minimize the impact of disputes and resolve them efficiently. In partnership with the firm’s tax group, Gutting identifies and manages actual or potential tax issues during a transaction’s planning phase particularly with regard to individual, partnership and corporate taxation matters.

Gutting is a tenured associate professor of law at the Charleston School of Law, teaching professional responsibility courses on basic federal income taxation, partnership taxation, civil tax procedure and litigation, tax research, and advanced federal income taxation. Previously she was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Florida – Levin College of Law’s Master of Laws (LL.M) in taxation program.

Gutting graduated cum laude from Valparaiso University with a degree in accounting. She received a law degree from the Saint Louis University School of Law and a Master of Law degree in taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law where she received the Richard B. Stephens Award for being the most outstanding student. Gutting is licensed to practice law in Florida and Georgia, and is in the application process to obtain her license to practice law in South Carolina.
